Electronic Commerce In Malaysia Not Possible?
Just few weeks ago when I had my breakfast with my classmates, some of them said that they might want to change course, which mainly because they think that E-Commerce is not popular in Malaysia. So I asked them: Why you choose to study this course in the beginning? Guess what answers I got from them?
“My mom told me to do so ; The program supervisor said this course has a bright future ; I NEVER heard of E-Commerce before ; E-Commerce… Don’t you think that it sounds cool?”
WTH, this is what I got from them…
I know… I know that E-Commerce is not popular here, but still I think that there must be something that we can do with those knowledge that we learn in college, right?
So do you think that Electronic Commerce do not have future in Malaysia?
E-commerce is where the world is heading now…. with this age of the internet……. more and more people are buying stuff online….. it beats going to the mall and getting the stuff and queuing up, mixing with the crowd, and finding parking space..etc. The future is there, just how you can survive in it, is another matter…..
I can’t disclose much, but I work as an admission staff before at a institution of learning, and I can say the e-commerce related course is very popular at the moment.

E-Commerce has no boundary. It flattens the world. There are quite a lot of companies dealing with e-commerce. If it is not popular here, why would ebay setup a malaysian site and paypal supporting malaysia? There has to be demand somewhere.
First of all stop listening to the crap your friends been telling you. Listen to your mom. Just like you, those friends of yours no better than you – zero knowledge of commercial world.
e-commerce slow coz due to restriction very few own credit card and due to security fewer use cc online.
e-commerce goin to shoot up with Prepaid cc been introduced coz now anyone below 21 can “owned” master card, any one with bad credit status also can “owned” master card.
POSPAY – mobilemoney – webcash – paypal – ebanking – fpx – now entering market as payment alterative to common credit card.
Trust me, soon Tesco C4 Giant will go estore.
Logically speaking – to open a store in major shopping cmplexes cost u at least Rm300k – 500k.
But e-store cost few hudred hosting – web store design …. all in less RM5k…. with adword ads… u may get 1 milllion page hit in few month.
BUT……….. our education system been screw…my time ppl study accouting, marketing, engineering, computer science, business admin….etc ….. REAL SUBJECT…..
these day…. ecommerce? web design? WTF … those day these are what we called HOBBIES.
Its just a matter of time before things start to pick up their pace.
ecommerce (b2b or b2c) is very possible in malaysia but your clearing bank better be out of the country. why?
coz there is a toll to be paid for every online transaction on top of the bank %

If I would have been given the choice to choose one more time, I will definitely be up for e-commerce, (burps, more towards Internet marketing I guess). Only crazy people that will think Malaysia will not follow what the world is doing. Do your friends have their own domain like you? Make them have one!
Another issues you have pointed out here is choosing courses (WTF?! Courses!) according to their mum just because the alphabet “E” sounds cool? Since when kids are so obedient? My dad tells me to cut down blogging to study seriously, look at what I’ve done.
I believe it’s not so much the course or what job brings you more money but…what you love doing.
Either way, if you hate doing that particular thing then you’ll never be happy. Some people are successful entrepreneurs because they like the rush of things.
I like my job (although it’s not much) and love my company (Simpleet) because I do what I love doing. Designing websites and improving the standards.
As for this e-commerce thing, Malaysia will remain a developing country but with a successful online strategy you can take advantage of e-commerce and market overseas easily.
So if I had to ask you a question, what do you love doing? Besides eat, sleep and hangout.

I’m sorry to say edward, those ARE REAL SUBJECT. You LOL now, but wait till you grads and start looking for job. Unless your papa or uncle or any relative a tycoon in business, I’ll be pretty dame sure you’ll cried out loud carrying a worthless piece of paper you called Degree.
I’ve been in corporate world almost 10 years, I’ve interviewed hundreds of fresh grad. Corporate these day always one thing in their mind, cut cost ! one way is to get multi tasking personnel.
Mean …. if I want to hire an accountant, I’ll get one with admin ad HR experieces so that they can doubled as my HR personnel.
Hiring a software engineer, I’ll be damn sure to get one not only goood with PHP,JAVA, etc…. I will choose one with database knowledge – MySql …. and most of time these ppl good with web design and server management.
Now tell me why would I want to hire one with degree in web designing who know nut bout programming when these day 10 years old can design a simple web using WYSIWYG s/w.
Even accountat who dun know ms excel will find hard to get a job.
Seriously I think E-commerce has its future, look how many people are buying online now. =)

If you feel that you can’t use your talent in Malaysia, you can use it elsewhere.
Ok, look at it this way. E-commerce now is the “in” trend. Kuching Mafia has mentioned from the point of an employers view. We should take it seriously.
However, there is an emerging market in Online store. With the whole credit card thingy coming out with Pre-paids (http://www.kennyljs.com/2007/11/27/i-got-a-call-from-ambank/) and Debit cards (ask Liewcf.com about PB Visa Electron experiences). More and more people are buying ONLINE. Which is where E-commerce is coming in.
One thing about learning E-commerce is that you can OPEN YOUR OWN Online store since you are well verse in E-commerce and marketing stuff.
The REALITY CHECK is that “CAN YOU SURVIVE IT?”
Assuming you don’t survive it, then you have a FIND A JOB. And if you meet interviewers like Kuching Mafia, she won’t even bother to look at your detail resume, before chopping : REJECT. On your application form.
With that said, don’t be dejected that people like Kuching Mafia saying that you can’t survive with only Web designing or web whatever skillz. You still can survive, it’s just how you grab the opportunity. And besides, I doubt those who learn Web designing or whatever can only use html without MYSQL….. since a simple website can be build without MYSQL, but what about a more complex website? html is not enough. But I doubt at a degree level or diploma level, you only learn basic html? That would really be a ridiculous course. Even my degree, I learn database, networks, programming…etc. So, doesn’t mean web designing you only learn html.
Anyway, I would seriously consider Kuching Mafia’s word as an employer though. Since she speaks the same language as one of my friend whom always try to view stuff from the point of the employers.
Anyway, E-Commerce is ‘quite’ similar to Business + Information Technology

what i feel is that the e-commerce is really booming in malaysia in this coming years.
why i said so? you see, now our government is encouraging citizen to go online, like e-banking, e-government, e-payment …
then, the age of internet users are decreasing. last years, most of internet users were from 15-20, today, is 12-25, how about next 5 years? it will be 10-35.
the more and more internet users mean more and more internet buyers/sellers, and this make the e-commerce a brighter future in coming year.

I want to say that, no matter what subject you study now. The most important is :- Do you really like the subject? Ask yourself, What you WANT TO do with these knowledge you learn from there. If it is useless but you love it, why not give it a try? At least you love it, rite? Just be kind to yourself and be happy with what you have now.
For E-commerce, I still think that it had a great future but maybe not in malaysia. what’s the problem? Do you been block from visit other country’s web? E-store?
E-commerce is not just limited to one country. So I think it’s not right to say that e-commerce has no future in Malaysia.
