Jucheck.exe
“jucheck.exe” is part of the Java Runtime from Sun Corporation and not a trojan, IF it is located where it is supposed to be – usually something like “C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\jucheck.exe“
Viruses or Trojans are normally named identically together with other program files and operating system components to avoid detection. If the files are in a location where they don’t belong then YES there is a good chance that it is a malicious file.
Some malware camouflage themselves as jucheck.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the jucheck.exe process on your pc whether it is pest.
Just make sure to do some research before you do something, you could be deleting an important system file!

I was suspecting it as a trojan. This info clarified my doubt.
Thanks
Before I delete this file I found I wanted to get any feed back I can first. When I searched my Computer for jucheck.exe I got 3 results . 2 of them seem ok and are located in C:Program files. But one file is in C:Windows:Prefetch . Now can you tell me why that would be there? Or if it is a real Java file? Thank you for you time.
Thank you for your clear info – my jucheck.exe file appears to be in the ‘right’ place.
But my query is, WHY? I haven’t asked to use Java. I understand that in general there are risks and vulnerabilities associated with it, which is why some network admins prefer to disable it.
So what’s it doing popping up and making itself part of my life, asking me 5 mins after each startup to give my permission for a Java program to continue?
Background history: I bought a new HP laptop last year, with Vista pre-installed (I begged the shopkeeper for XP instead, but no deal). That’s it, period. No online gaming. No IRC. No P2P file sharing. No fancy software. The only things I have installed are an internet wireless dongle (for the 3 network; my browser is M/S Internet Explorer) and Windows Media Player. Do either of these rely upon use of Java? I doubt it, since when I refuse permission for the Java program to continue (jucheck.exe) the dongle continues to work satisfactorily anyway. As does Media Player.
Can anyone explain why I would have Java installed on my machine, making periodic insistent noises to be permitted to run?
I have the same question as John.. Why does it keep popping up for me to install or run? I haven’t had any problems NOT running it, so why should i?
ask for publisher in none identified i don t believe it s real
Just as Al, I have run a search and found it in 2 places. One is a Java folder. The other is in C:\Windows\prefetch. Using my highly trained skills, I have come to realise that JUCHECK is NOT a necessary Java file as some have alluded (jucheck = Java Update Checker) but rather an important .exe file used to check for Jews. Hence the name Jucheck……. hmmm.

Dear Edward Khoo
Thank you VERY MUCH for a very clear explanation as to what jucheck.exe, is all about. Namely a normal part of Sun Micro Systems Java Update.
I appreciate your telling us how to tell it is probably safe (if in correct folder location), and how it is likely a VIRUS if not in correct location.
But my question is this: Couldn’t a really smart hacker place a bad VIRUS in just this same location. Or are there blocks for this location?
Thanks again

I have a new hp laptop and jucheck.exe is constantly pestering me to download it. Even when I say “no”, it comes back to haunt me and waste my time.
Can I assume since it is NOT IN ANY FOLDER YET that it is safe to download?
Thanks for any clarification.
thanks for the info. i found the jucheck in both the “good” location/file and the windows\system32 one. How do I just remove it so it does not come up again and again???
jucheck.exe is constantly popping up and requesting my permission to make changes to my harddrive. when i say no another popup follows says new version of java ready to download. not sure about it. i figure if my pc has java why do i need this version update. even when i say no it keep popping up.
My wife’s new Win 7 HP laptop has been giving her that jucheck.exe message. I found jucheck.exe in 2 places which I suspect is ok, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Java\Java Upd… and C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin. From what is stated above this appears to be a valid application….hopefully.
To stop the aautomated Java Update process, bring up the Java Control Panel (right-click the Java icon and click Properties) Select the “Update” tab and UN-check the “Check for Updates Automatically” box. Java will scream and cry and dispaly a big old pop-up saying you will be really sorry if you don’t get your regular Java fix, but click the “Never Update” button anyway. You can update your version of java at will by clicking the “Update Now” button when you are ready for it.
This works for Win 7 – don’t know if same process works on Vista and XP
How do you pull up the Java Control Panel?
So why is the publisher info “unknown”!! They should fix this, you would think…
